San Clemente History
Though long admired by explorers, the city of San Clemente remained inhabited only by the Juaneño Indians untill the late 18th century. In 1776, Father Junipero Serra established the Mission San Juan Capistrano and gradually brought both Indian and Spanish settlers to what is now known as San Clemente. In 1925, the former Mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, built a community here. He named the city San Clemente, literally meaning “The Spanish Village by the Sea”, after San Clemente Island. On February 27, 1928, the area was officially incorporated as a city.

The city of San Clemente offers excellent opportunities for hiking and biking along the beautifully meandering coastline and ridgeline. There are quite a few amusement parks that have fun rides and slides ideal for the children. Some parks are situated right on the beaches, and one can go to these parks for picnics with family and friends. There are also about 3 golf courses in or around the city where visitors can enjoy a game with friends. The Palisade Reservoir is another popular tourist destination. There are also quite a few churches and shopping plazas that dot the lanes of this beautiful city.
